 Tree Planting Program

For over ten years, the Clackamas River Basin Council (CRBC) has worked with streamside landowners to protect our water quality and wildlife habitat by removing invasive weeds and planting native trees within the Clackamas watershed. We are offering qualifying streamside landowners FREE native trees and shrubs!!! Planting native trees and shrubs near the streamside creates a riparian buffer that offers many benefits to you and the environment. If you are interested in learning more about how you can receive FREE trees and shrubs, please contact us at (503) 558-0550 or email laura@clackamasriver.org

Frequently asked questions

What is a riparian buffer?
A riparian buffer is the vegetated area next to a stream or river, which provides many benefits to the ecosystem. Every foot of buffer helps. The average recommended width is 50 feet, but there are obviously many variables that make each location unique. Steeper slopes, faster river flows, and heavier usage upslope all affect the optimal buffer size. We'll be happy to work with you to develop a planting plan that suits your needs and the needs of the environment.

What are the benefits of riparian buffers?
Riparian buffers are extremely important to you and the environment.

What are native plants?
Native plants are species that occur naturally in an area or have existed there for numerous years. Native plants are adapted for the local environment and coexist with other plants and wildlife.

What are invasive species?
Invasive species are plants or animals that are not historically native to an area and cause detrimental economic or environmental impact. Invasive weeds often aggresively invade an area, outcompeting native species to create monocultures.

What does the CRBC want to do?
Recent studies show that miles of streams in the Clackamas watershed are without tree cover and would be greatly improved by planting native vegetation along their banks. With your partnership, we would like to remedy this situation by planting native trees and shrubs along the stream on your property.

What is required of you, the landowner?
If you are interested in having the Clackamas River Basin Council plant native trees and shrubs, all that we need from you is written permission to access your streamside property. There is no catch! We will always provide you with advance notice and will work with you to develop a planting plan that suits your needs. To sign up, please email laura@clackamasriver.org. With your help, our efforts to improve the Clackamas River watershed will succeed!

We hope to hear from you soon!
