 Filter out sediments

Riparian buffers act as natural sieves, straining unwanted soil particles and pollutants from reaching our waterways. When rainwater runs over bare soil or wide grassy lawns, it picks up tiny sediments and pollutants, washing them into our rivers and streams. Left untreated, stormwater runoff can wash excess fertilizers and pesticides into the river, leading to algal blooms, which are not only unsightly but also detrimental to endangered salmon populations. In addition to reducing sedimentation, the presence of a healthy riparian buffer also increases the rate of groundwater infiltration.
